The relocation process is a challenging one. Along with the stress of packing and arranging the move, it takes time to settle in once you arrive in your new city. Even though you have a place to come home to, you need connections to really feel at home. And when you have kids, the process can be even more challenging, as they will be acclimating to a new school, making new friends, and developing a sense of familiarity. Here’s how to make it all go smoothly.
Changing Your Coverage
There are a lot of expenses involved with moving, and there are always things to purchase for a new home. With those things weighing on their minds, Bob Vila explains homeowners often miss hidden costs, like storage units and utilities transfers. Along those same lines, remember in a new location, your auto insurance will change. Particularly if you’re moving states, you will want to know what the minimum requirements are, and many homeowners forget this can affect their overall budget.
Also, research local statistics of uninsured and underinsured drivers. This will help you determine whether you need to cut back your coverage, expand your coverage, or go all out with full coverage. Look at several agencies and compare rates so that you can make the best decision for your family and your budget.
Settling In Your Belongings
When you arrive at your new home, you will obviously need to unpack your belongings. Looking at a packed moving truck (or two) can feel overwhelming, but it’s less stressful if you unpack a little at a time and go room by room.
Ideally, you will have a section of essential items that you can unpack first and have for the first few nights; this includes things like toiletries, kitchen utensils and chargers. As far as unpacking room by room, consider unpacking your children's’ rooms first, so that they can start feeling a sense of normalcy.
Decorating the New Digs
Once you have all your belongings unpacked, you will want to consider any decor changes you want to make. While you should take time to implement the changes, it helps to start planning early, especially if you want to invest in upgrades. For instance, factor in the colors of your interior, like walls, floors, ceilings, countertops, and so forth, when deciding how to furnish the home. Also, think of ways you can maximize space and storage. The goal is to ensure appeal, comfort and function for your family.
Reaching Out to Neighbors
As far as settling into your new surroundings goes, the first thing you want to do is meet your neighbors. You can do it the old fashioned way, by going door-to-door and introducing yourselves, or you can throw a housewarming party and invite the neighborhood. You’ll find your new neighbors can help you get used to the city, recommending the best places to go and things to do. Moreover, it’s especially important for your kids to make friends in the neighborhood.
Getting to Know the Area
Along with asking your neighbors about things to do in the area, you can also check out local coffee shops, libraries and visitors centers for information. You may be overwhelmed with settling into your new home, workplaces and schools, but as Apartment Ratings explains, it’s important to get out on the town and explore. In reality, it’s the only way to become comfortable with the area. Keep an open mind as you consider community events, local attractions and groups you can join.
Likewise, look for activities your children might be interested in. Along with signing them up for extracurricular activities at school, consider recreational sports teams, book clubs, and other community organizations that will give them the opportunity to get involved and meet other kids.
It’s rarely easy to pick your life up and move, especially when you have youngsters. With smart strategies, it can feel a lot less stressful for everyone. Making some connections can go a long way in helping you settle in. Remember that it takes time for a residence to become a home, so just enjoy the moment as you create new memories together.
