The History of Cook County

Cook County was founded on January 15th, 1831, separating from Putnam County by an act of the Illinois General Assembly. Cook County is the 54th county established by Illinois, named after Daniel Cook, one of the earliest and youngest salesmen in the state’s history.

During the 1830s and 1840s, farmers purchased the majority of available land in the county to raise crops and livestock. Some hauled their harvest to Chicago, but due to the lack of railroads at the time, many went to closer, smaller settlements. The development of railroads and street railways enabled Chicagoans to live and work in Suburban areas like Skokie. Although farming in Cook County didn’t disappear, outlying growth by the 1900s was largely suburban.

Fast forward to the mid-1900s, and communities like Oak Lawn and Skokie were among the fastest-growing suburbs, with thousands of single-family homes built in each. Urban growth continued to engulf the area, and while the county’s expansion ceased, the population grew to what we know as Chicago and Cook County today.
