Moving into a new home can take some time, and unfortunately for many families without a good plan, it can take weeks or months to fully settle in. Not only is there unpacking to do, but there are also decorating choices to make, decisions about furniture arrangement, things to put together, and getting used to being in a new neighborhood. It’s a big process to take on, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or stressful. Preparing well and staying organized will help you get into your home and settle in quickly.

If you have kids or pets, it can be especially important to settle in without delay, since big changes can lead to anxiety and stress. Having boxes sitting around waiting to be unpacked and having to dig through them to find what you need can be stressful for you, too, and it can delay your ability to feel comfortable in your own home.

Keep reading for some great tips on how to get settled in quickly after a move.

Prioritize

You may want to jump in and get started with unpacking, but it’s best to take a moment to make some lists and get organized first. Think about the things you’ll need access to immediately, such as kitchenware, clothing, and bathroom items, and unpack accordingly. Many people start with closets and bureau drawers so that going back to work and school won’t be a chaotic game of hide-and-seek. If you have cleaning to do, make sure you get it done as you unpack. Many people choose to use paper plates and order take-out during a move, and if this is the case for you, it might be unnecessary to unpack the kitchen right away. Focus on the items you need first.

Find Something Familiar

Although many of us are tempted to buy lots of new accessories for a new home, having something familiar around the house can help you feel more comfortable right away. Whether it’s your favorite comforter or a clock that’s been through several moves with you, set it up as soon as possible so it will help you feel at home.

Figure Out Your Routine

Keeping a similar routine to the one you’re used to can help reduce stress, especially if you have kids that are in school or a busy schedule. Try to keep bedtime the same and find out the specifics of your neighborhood, such as when trash day is and what time the mail is delivered. Get familiar with your community so you can stay on schedule, especially on busy mornings.

Clean up

Cleaning your new home is an important step in making it feel like your own. Go through each room and wipe down the walls, clean the floors, check the heating and A/C vents for dust and debris, and scrub the baseboards. Getting rid of dust and pet dander from previous owners will help your family stay healthy, but keeping it away is a different job. Consider investing in an electrostatic air filter to help keep your house free of pollen, mold, dust mites, and bacteria. However, do some research before you buy to make sure you get the one that best fits your needs, such as one that eliminates allergens or controls odors.

Settling into a new home can be hard on little ones, so be sure to try to stay on your routine for their sake and help them stay on track. Set up their bedrooms and closets first so they have all their belongings organized, and listen to their concerns. For pets, make sure you pet-proof the home by putting up baby gates to prevent falls down unfamiliar stairs and look around the yard for plants that might be toxic.

Moving can stress out the entire family, but it doesn’t need to be that way. With a good plan, you and your family can settle in to your new home quickly.
