If you’re considering a potential career in real estate, it can be scary thinking about leaving the security and stability of your current job to entirely switch fields. It can certainly feel like a leap of faith when you’re not sure what to expect in your first year as a new realtor. Many prospective real estate agents who had similar feelings have found that the best way to get started in real estate is to work on it part time.

With a steady income coming in from another job, you won’t have to worry as much about building a clientele base in your new career path. When you’re just getting started as a realtor, you likely won’t be able to predict how many clients you’ll get, how much commission you’ll earn, and what fluctuations might happen in the housing market. Some agents even choose to continue working part-time indefinitely because it allows them the flexibility to be an involved parent, to stay active as a retiree, or to dedicate time to whatever else is important in their lives. While this flexibility is great to have, there are a few things you should know when trying to decide if you want to be a real estate broker part time or full time.

One way that some agents deal with scheduling challenges is by having a network of fellow real estate agents that can help you out if you’re in a bind, and can’t find overlapping availability with your clients. Another potential option of being a part-time realtor is that you can work evenings and weekends, offering flexibility to your clients.
